Everything You Need to Know About Islands

We owe a lot to historic voyagers who, intrigued by curiosity, set sail to discover new islands and cultures. Without them, who would have known about the exotic flora and fauna that have existed for millions of years? If Christopher Columbus hadn’t discovered the Americas, would the world have known about chilli peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, and other ingredients ubiquitous to modern cuisine? If your idea of a dream vacation involves lounging on the beach, enjoying watersports and swimming with marine animals, or going for a romantic stroll with nobody but your fiancé and the moon for company, check out GT Holidays’ island tour package.

About Islands in General

There are about 67,000 islands in the world some owned by countries, and some, like Antarctica, are claimed by all but owned by none. However, these numbers are constantly changing as new islands continue to be formed while small uninhabited islands may erode.

Greenland is the world’s largest island country, although Australia is three times larger than the latter and is considered a continent mass. That is why Australia is sometimes called an island continent.

Just Room Enough Island, or Hub Island, is the smallest inhabited island in the world. As the name suggests, it is only 3,300 square feet, with just enough room for a house, a tree, and a porch. The island is owned by the Sizeland family, who have converted it into a family retreat. Just Enough Room Island is part of the Thousand Islands archipelago, off New York.

Narau is the world’s smallest island country, covering around 8 square miles and the third smallest country.

Some islands are prohibited for the general public to enter to protect the environment or the island’s original inhabitants. For instance, the North Sentinel Island is part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and is home to the Sentinelese tribe. They are one of the world’s oldest indigenous tribes, having lived on the island for over 60,000 years and could have been direct descendants of tribes emerging from Africa.

Devon Island in Nunavut, Canada, is the largest uninhabited island in the world, as it is too cold and windy to be inhabited. Tristan da Cunha Islands are among the remotest islands in the world and home to over 250 families. It is around 2,787 km from Cape Town, South Africa.

The Existential Threat to Islands

An estimated 730 million people, or around 9% of the population, call the islands home. They are also home to unique and fragile flora and fauna, some of which have existed since prehistoric times. For instance, the island of Grimsey in Iceland is home to over a million.

Islands also play a huge role in the evolutionary process. For instance, islands like Madagascar were created when landmasses broke away millions of years ago, forcing the animals on the island to develop unusual traits to survive in their new home. They even transformed into a new species altogether. Some animals, like the leaf tailed gecko, became masters of disguise to protect themselves from the snakes that inhabited Madagascar.

Yet scientists claim that several islands, such as the Maldives, Micronesia, Fiji, and Tuvalu, will be completely submerged in water by the end of this century. Some islands in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific have already disappeared, with their inhabitants relocating to bigger islands within the country. Marine life is also disappearing – the Solomon Islands’ famous non-stinging jellyfish have all but disappeared.

Climate changes, including rising sea levels and increased ocean temperatures, slowly but steadily push marine species, including corals, into extinction. Many of these islands are experiencing increasing high tide floods.

Rising ocean temperatures are causing corals to bleach and putting some of the vulnerable marine life depending on these corals in danger. While nations across the world and international environmental bodies are fighting to save islands from sinking, ordinary people like you and me can prevent climate change by making conscious choices like switching to renewable energy resources, recycling whenever possible, buying sustainable products and encouraging sustainable tourism.
