Everything You Need to Know About Bangalore

About Bengaluru

Bengaluru was founded in 1537 by Kempe Gowda I, a feudal lord of the Vijayanagara Empire. However, archaeologists have found evidence of settlements as far back as the 9th century in the Nagesvara Temple inscription in Begur. The British later renamed Bengaluru Bangalore when they moved their cantonment from Shrirangapatna to the city.

The city is famous for its gardens, parks, and lakes. The Lalbagh Garden was commissioned in 1706 by Hyder Ali, who imported rare plants from Multan and Lahore. The city was once called the City of a Thousand Lakes, but only a handful remain today, thanks to rapid urbanisation.

But what makes Bengaluru a must-visit destination is its people. Unlike in other major cities where people are often in a rush, Bangloreans are usually relaxed and very friendly. The city has a cosmopolitan vibe that tolerates different religions, castes, and economic backgrounds.

Bangalore also has an active pub life and, in fact, has the highest density of pubs in the country. These pubs often reflect an eclectic social life, where it is common for friends to gather together for a drink or two after a long day at work.

Top Reasons To Choose Our Bengaluru Tour Packages

Bengaluru, India’s most cosmopolitan city, is famous for its tech-based startups, pubs, gardens, and gentle climate. It’s a city where tradition blends beautifully with modernity. While there aren’t any world-class sites or monuments, Bangalore has its charm, attracting millions of tourists from across the world. Here are a few reasons you must consider booking Bangalore tour packages.

Gardens

The city is home to two famous gardens: the Lalbagh Botanical Garden and Cubbon Park, which has been renamed Sri Chamarajendra Park. Hyder Ali commissioned Lalbagh, but his son Tipu Sultan completed it. This 240-acre park is a horticultural haven with rare plants, including the famous Colville’s Glory, originally imported by Tipu Sultan from Mauritius.

Cubbon Park, another beautiful garden, was established in 1870 by Sir John Meade. This 300-acre garden, with its open lawns, well-kept roads, and playgrounds, is the perfect getaway for locals and tourists.

Lumbini Gardens is located in Hebbal, a suburb on the outskirts of Bengaluru. It is popular among locals for its water rides, boating, and a floating restaurant.

Amazing Cultural Vibes

The city isn’t just for the tech nerds; its cosmopolitan culture offers elbow room for art and culture. The Chitra Santhe could easily be India’s largest street celebration of art. Artists from across the country showcase and sell their work at the market. The Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath is also popular among art enthusiasts.

If you’re a fan of performing arts, head to Ranga Shankara, a prominent space for quality theatre and performing artists.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Bengaluru was the country’s rock ‘n’ roll capital, with bands springing up across the city. While this genre isn’t as popular as a few decades ago, plenty of clubs host rock ‘n’ roll nights. Bengaluru even has its own sub-genre, Bangalore Rock, which combines classic rock, hard rock, metal, blues, and jazz. The city is home to several indie artists like Agam, Raghu Dixit Project, and Swarathma.

Bibliophiles can head to Church Street, famous for its quaint bookstores selling vintage classics, old textbooks, and second-hand and brand-new books. And if you’re tired of all the window shopping, head to the legendary Koshy’s for sandwiches and hot coffee.

Eclectic Food Scene

Whether you’re in the mood for traditional or contemporary, Bangalore’s food scene has something for everyone. Legendary joints like Koshy’s, Veena Stores, MTR, Vidyarthi Bhavan, Airlines Hotel, and CTR (now Shiv Sagar) are still open and serving their iconic food.

If you’re a fan of Andhra food, head to Navayuga in Majestic for spicy Andhra biryani and veg/non-veg meals. Brahmin’s in Basavanagudi serves the best filter coffee and podi idli. Shivaji Military Hotel in Banashankari has been serving legendary biryani since 1935. To sample North Karnataka cuisine, head to Hotel Nalapaka in Rajaji Nagar.

Any true blue Bangalorean will tell you how the many Iyengar Bakery outlets shaped their childhood, where you could sample their legendary Benne biscuits, khara buns, dil pasands, masala toasts, Congress kadlekais, and honey cakes for cheap.

If you’re in the mood for some vintage continental charm, head to The Rogue Elephant Café, famous for its old-world décor, freshly brewed coffee, and Mediterranean cuisine.

Affordable Shopping Scene

Bangalore is a haven for shopping enthusiasts with shopping destinations that match your budget and fashion choices. Commercial Street and Brigade Road are famous for hole-in-the-wall boutiques selling the latest fashion. If you’re looking for cheap shopping options, head to Jayanagar.

The 400-year-old Chickpet is famous for silk saree shopping, kurtis, wholesale dress materials, and accessories.

Head to Malleswaram for affordable kurti shopping and antique shops. MG Road is the favourite for saree lovers, with shops like Prassidhi and Deepam Silks. If you love second-hand books, head to Avenue Road.

Best Time To Visit Bengaluru

Bengaluru has a tropical savannah climate, but the weather is pleasant throughout the year. Even when it gets too hot, the rain gods bless the city with surprise showers. The best thing about Bangalore’s weather is that it doesn’t experience seasonal extremes. This is because the city is at a higher elevation and is located close to the Western Ghats. In fact, it is over 3000 ft above sea level and above hill stations like Dehradun and Matheran. Also, there’s relatively less humidity, preventing the weather from excessive heat or cold.

The best time to choose Bengaluru tour packages is from October to February, when the weather is cool and pleasant. The average temperature ranges from 14°Ç to 28°C, with temperatures dropping to less than 10°C in some places.

Iconic Places You Must Include In Your Bengaluru Tour Packages

Bangalore is home to gardens, palaces, old markets, and picturesque lakes worth exploring. Some iconic places you will visit with our Bengaluru tour packages include:

Lal Bagh

Lalbagh Botanical Garden is set on 240 acres in the middle of the city and houses rare tropical and subtropical plants. Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan sourced some of these plants and trees from various quarters of the world. The garden was built in 1760 and declared a botanical garden in 1856. The Glasshouse, constructed in 1889, shelters delicate plants and looks magical when lit in the evening. If you’re a phytophile and interested in a detailed tour of Lalbagh, sign up for a heritage walk with your Bengaluru tour packages.

Cubbon Park

Cubbon Park was initially called Meades Park but was later renamed Sri Chamarajendra Park in 1927 in honour of the late Mysore Maharaja Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar. However, the name Cubbon Park has stuck among the locals. The park was established in 1870 and is now famous for the many plants, trees, and statues that dot this green space.

If you’re an avid plant lover, we suggest signing up for a heritage walk with our Bengaluru tour packages, where you can learn more about its history and the adjoining historic buildings like the Attara Kacheri or the High Court of Karnataka, Government Museum, and the MGID Building.

Tipu Sultan Palace

Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace is located in the heart of Old Bangalore and was built in the Indo-Islamic style. While his father, Hyder Ali, originally commissioned the palace, Tipu Sultan completed it. The palace is made using teakwood and is similar to his Daria Daulat palace in Srirangapatna. The two-story palace is exquisitely carved with giant wooden beams that hold the structure together.

The highlight of the palace is a painting of a grand throne studded with precious stones, which Tipu Sultan himself visualised. Apparently, Tipu never used the throne as he had pledged never to sit on it until he threw away the British. After his death, the British dismantled the throne and sold it to different people as it was too expensive to sell to a single person.

Bangalore Palace

The Bangalore Palace is a Tudor-Scottish-Gothic castle inspired by the Windsor Palace and commissioned by Maharaja Chamarajendra Wodeyar in 1878. It is built over 454 acres and fortified with turrets and watch towers. The interiors are ornate and lined with old artefacts, paintings, chandeliers, and detailed sculptures. The palace is also home to well-maintained gardens and courtyards.

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum

VITM is a part of the National Council of Science Museums and was established in 1958. The museum is a treasure trove of machines, artefacts, and life-size replicas.
